Mainstream voices have dominated marketing and advertising spaces, and there is a need for audiences, customers and consumers to be spoken to and reached in an authentic and credible way.

In partnership with the Black Cultural Archives (BCA) and Niche on Demand (NoD), this video series explores the pioneers in Black British marketing, their influence and contributions.

This is one of three interviews in this series. Each interview draws on key themes such as lessons learnt from being one of the first black-owned strategic marketing consultancies in the UK, the influence of black creatives and marketers on Brand Activism, and building on the next generation of black marketers/researchers.

Who is Dr. Glen Yearwood?
Glen Yearwood was born on the eastern Caribbean island of Saint Vincent in 1963. Glen joined his mother in Luton, Bedfordshire in February 1971.

Schooled at Beech Hill high in Bury Park and further educated at Manchester Metropolitan University in Political Science and Economics, Glen’s first assignment after University was to become a full time member of commercial staff at the Times of London working on both Sunday Times and The Times as commercial sales. Glen was recorded as the first black man to occupy full time staff at the Times of London since its inception of 1785.

Raising significant amounts of venture capital in the City of London during the technology boom of the mid ‘90’s with his business partner, Everton Wright, he raised £3 million in 1999 with a technology concept based on Motown music factory. The venture was titled: Darker Than Blue dot com, named after a Curtis Mayfield song. The online property was able to sign and promote Black music and artists to a global audience and was responsible for the nascent promotion of many acts such as Jill Scott, Craig David, Estelle and more.

Glen developed one of the UK’s first strategic marketing consultancy titled Soul Marketing. The role was to bring to the advertising world, the discipline and insights of Black and Minority Ethnic statistics, impacts and narratives which were unique to this consumer group. He was successful in winning business such as ONS, Tesco’s and COI; and used the marketing vehicle to pitch and successfully win the business in the US of Black Entertainment Television Networks (BET) with a brief to launch the channel in the UK and Europe. This was successfully done and Soul Marketing was the first UK black owned marketing consultancy to be hand picked by BET owners (Viacom) in the US.

Glen took a delegation of British Black owned business leaders to University of North Carolina (Wilmington) – a HBCU. The delegation included Yana Johnson and Tim Campbell, winner of televised the Apprentice. His role was to connect Black entrepreneurial leadership between the UK and the US based on our lived and shared experiences. He held a number of seminars and presentations to share best practice.

In 2012 Glen launched a wellbeing information seminar for melanin rich people called Beauty Within Me. The event held at SOAS over the bank holiday weekend in August provided a marketplace for black owned entrepreneurs and practitioners to meet clients and patients who required information about products and practises’ that were chemical free and leaned on the oratory traditions of Africa healing. The event and over subscription of patrons is set for a return in 2021.

In 2015, Glen left the UK to visit Australia and live with and “innerstand” indigenous peoples and social structures around the world. His time in Australia added to his life and spiritual experiences. He eventually settled and lived with Aboriginal community in the Australian desert: the Pintupi Lurijta and the Arrernte people of Alice Springs. He was accepted into their close knit social structure and after time awarded the Aboriginal skin name of Jungari which means “uncle or storyteller”. Glen speaks Aboriginal language of Arrernte and before leaving in March 2020 because of COVID and his worsening illness, he hosted and presented a radio show called the 12 Apostles of Black Music which was syndicated nationally across Australia by community radio network. Glen continues to live his truth as a Story Teller.

South West Mutual purpose is to support inclusivity and sustainable prosperity across the southwest region as a community bank for the southwest of England.
We were honoured to be part of their ‘In Conversations with South West Mutual’ where our Managing Director Jabo Butera shared his insights on barriers holding back BAME entrepreneurs in the south-west, things that could be done by local businesses to address positivity towards issues concerning diversity and what banks can do better to address disparities across gender, locations and ethnicity towards business owners.

According to BBB (British Business Bank), they found out that BAME entrepreneurs experience far worse outcomes on average. Which means that Black-owned businesses have a medium turnover of just £25,000 compared to White-owned businesses whose turnovers are £30,000. They also state that ‘Only half of Black entrepreneurs meet their non-financial aims, compared to nearly 70% of White entrepreneurs and those from Asian and other Ethnic Minority background have better outcomes than Black entrepreneurs. However, they have a substantially lower rate of starting a business and see less success overall compared to White entrepreneurs.

#inconversationwithsouthwestmutual #conversations #localbanking #DBI #southwest

Our social media platforms:
Insta: @dbi_uk
Twitter: @dbi_uk
Facebook: @Diversity Business Incubator or @DBIDEVON
LinkedIn: @Diversity Business Incubator
YouTube: @Diversity Business Incubator

Their social media platforms:
Insta: @southwestmutual
Twitter: @southwestmutual
Facebook: @South west Mutual
LinkedIn: @South west Mutual
YouTube: @South west Mutual

music
LICENCE PARTICULARS:
Licensee Name: Diversity Business Incubator
Licensee Address: Unit 37, Plymouth, PL1 3HQ
Service Name: Ptown Radio
Website Address: www.ptownradio.co.uk

Young, Gifted and Grinding focuses on innovative black entrepreneurs in Britain who are carving out opportunities for themselves and turning their passion into profit.

I wanted to make Young, Gifted and Grinding a platform to highlight the variety of ways Black British entrepreneurs are flourishing. The project was also an opportunity for me to hear stories first-hand from people across the country who inspire myself and many other young entrepreneurs.

You can find out more about the project here - http://ndrika.com/ygg/
http://ndrika.com/ygg/
Twitter / Instagram /Facebook @ndrikaanyika

I hope everyone is keeping head above water. I know it’s been a tough year to say the least.

firstly I’d like to say thank you so much for all the love on my last film. I noticed a lot of you want more content on similar subjects which I’m elated about because I love looking into emigration/immigration and tourism. However, this year just hasn’t been the year to do that effectively so here we are!

2020 (amongst other things) has brought a lot of attention to the importance of supporting black businesses and I, like many, became completely engrossed on the topic so took my camera round and interviewed a few interesting, very wise people on their thoughts on the matter. Hope you enjoy what I managed to scrape together on this very complex topic!!

Thank you to all who contributed!
Dr Lisa D Cook: https://twitter.com/drlisadcook

Will Adoasi: https://www.instagram.com/williamadoasi/ https://vitaelondon.com/

Kadija Kanu: https://www.instagram.com/kadija_kanu/
https://kkafrique.com/

Moses Osibanjo: https://www.instagram.com/wearenewfade/
https://newfade.co.uk/

Andy Davis: https://www.instagram.com/mrandydavis/
https://theblack.report/

Stock footage provided by Videvo, downloaded from www.videvo.net

Intro Archive Videos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R663zMNL02I&t=338s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3t-DcpN4Zc&t=29s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNrQdznCMw4&t=76s

In the run-up to Black Pound Day, business and public sector leaders discuss the importance of Black businesses to the local and nationwide economy.

What is Black Pound Day?

More than simply one day per year, Black Pound Day is a national movement that encourages consumers to switch up their usual shopping destinations to local and online Black-owned businesses, every first Saturday of the month.

It aims to positively impact the UK's shopping habits by encouraging them to become more inclusive, whilst, adding value to the Black economy and communities.

But the phenomenal impact of this movement, has also re-ignited the debate on fair and equal representation and support of black-owned businesses and their economic contribution to the UK, which is currently estimated to be £25 billion per year.

Speakers include...

Cllr Sharon Thompson, Cabinet Member – Homes and Neighbourhoods

Birmingham City Council Cabinet Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods, Councillor Sharon Thompson, has been a Councillor since 2014. In 2018/19 she had political responsibility for Parks and Allotments, she relinquished these in 2019/2020 and took the functions of registrations of birth, deaths and marriage into her portfolio.

Joel Blake OBE

Joel is a multi-award-winning businessman, public speaker and advisor, with a passion for driving business growth, through financial technology and entrepreneurial leadership.

Joel is the Founder & CEO of www.gfaexchange.com an award-winning B2B FinTech company, that provides machine learning solutions to reduce risk and cost for financial services firms.

He is the former Executive for Access to Finance and Growing Business for the GBSLEP, and advises professional and public sector bodies, on their business support models and strategies.

Joel is also the President of the Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce, National Ambassador for the Institute of Leadership and Management, a Fellow of the National Centre for Entrepreneurs and a Non-Executive Director of two organisations.

He was awarded an OBE for Services to Business Support and Enterprise in 2016.

Professor Monder Ram OBE

Director of the Centre for Research in Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship (CREME).
