If you're a black man in Britain you're 17 times more likely to be diagnosed with a serious mental health condition than if you're white. It's a startling statistic and it led blogger and DJ Keith Du-bay to make a film for the BBC to investigate why.

A hospice therapist's talk about the causation of early death, specifically in racially marginalized communities. Through a mixture of real life stories and healthcare facts, Ashley provides a powerful look into this preventable crisis. Based in Washington, Ashley McGirt is an international speaker, author, and a trauma informed therapist. Aside from being the owner of Ashley McGirt Counseling Services LLC and founder of the Worldwide Wellness tour, she also serves as a hospice clinician for a non-profit organization.
McGirt’s profound interest in life and death, as well as the fascinating field of psychology and hospice, began when she first read the book “Tuesdays with Morrie”, which helped she realize how much the dying can teach us about living. Since then she has been dedicated to helping individuals to not only live well but die well. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
50 years ago, the Father of Black Psychology, Professor Joseph L. White published the seminal article 'Towards a Black Psychology', challenging the dominance of white middle-class culture in determining what psychologists considered 'normal'. Half a century on, many (white) people are still uncomfortable discussing the important and controversial topic of mental health and race.

The publication of The International Handbook of Black Community Mental Health heralds that it is time for change and action, by bringing together the global work of researchers and practitioners including those from the UK, Europe and US.
The Handbook illuminates the personal, lived experiences of everyday racism, micro-aggressions, racial battle fatigue, and implicit provider bias encountered by people of colour within the mental health, school and University systems beyond the statistics.

Crucially, contributors go on to not only outline and make policy recommendations but have developed proven interventions, including practical, clinical and therapeutic applications and new technologies that can help to address the problems encountered by both black mental health professionals and service users.

PROGRAMME

Hosted by Michael Hamilton of The Ubele Initiative and Helen George of BME Voices Talk Mental Health

Karen Carberry and Dr Theodore Ransaw Co-Editors

Dr Patrick Vernon OBE Thirty Years of Black History Month and Thirty Years of Overrepresentation in the Mental Health System

Dr Gail Coleman-Oluwabusola Forty Years in the Wilderness: A Review of Systemic Barriers to Reducing the Over-representation of Black Men in the UK Psychiatric System

Dr Sharon Walker Big, Black, Mad and Dangerous in the Criminal Justice System

Dr Nicholas Banks ‘Lone Wolf’ Case Study Considerations of Terrorist Radicalisation from the Black Experience

Ivan Juzang Founder & President MEE Productions Moving Young Black Men Beyond Survival Mode: Protective Factors for Their Mental Health

Dr Tony Talburt Targeted Intervention in Education and the Empowerment and Emotional Well-being of Black Boys

Professor Dawn Edge Researching African-Caribbean Mental Health in the UK: An Assets-based Approach to Developing Psychosocial Interventions for Schizophrenia and Related Psychoses

Professor Fabricio E.
Understanding the cultural heritage of individuals living with dementia, enables high quality, safe, person centred care that focuses on the individual rather than the disease, and an understanding of challenges that may be rooted in a person’s cultural background.

‘Finding Patience’ opens the door for health and care professionals to start talking about cultural sensitivities that may result in a reluctance to come forward and talk about concerns. It aims to encourage health and care professionals to break down barriers in order to reach people who may otherwise go undiagnosed or struggle in isolation to provide care within family units.

The film aligns to tier 1 (awareness level) dementia training, which aims to; familiarise people with recognising and understanding dementia; support people interacting with those with dementia; and provide people with the knowledge to be able to signpost patients and carers to appropriate support.

www.hee.nhs.uk/dementia
www.demace.com
www.culturedementiauk.org
www.raceequalityfoundation.org.uk
www.alzheimers.org.uk
www.dementiauk.org

Contact inquiries@nextanimation.com to license this or any News Direct video
For story suggestions please contact tips@nextanimation.com.tw

RESTRICTIONS: NONE

Prodigy, one half of hip-hop and rap duo Mobb Deep, died Tuesday in Las Vegas at the age of 42 after being hospitalized for complications related to sickle cell anemia.

Mobb Deep is widely regarded as one of the most successful acts of all time. Prodigy, born Albert Johnson, suffered from sickle cell anemia since birth.

Sickle cell disease is a group of red blood cell disorders passed by genes from parents to their children. For example, if both parents have sickle-cell trait, a child has a 50% chance of having the sickle-cell trait, 25% will not carry sickle-cell alleles, and 25% develop a chance of having sickle-cell disease as two hemoglobin S genes are inherited.

Hemoglobin is a protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells. Red blood cells that contain normal hemoglobin are disc shaped, whereas sickle cell hemoglobin forms long and inflexible chains. Normal red blood cells are flexible and can pass through large and small blood vessels. Sickled red blood cells can stick to vessel walls, which can cause a blockage in the vessels that stops the oxygen delivery.

Normal red blood cells can live up to 120 days. When the number of red blood cells decreases, the kidneys releases erythropoietin hormone that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells.

Sickled blood cells can only last up to 20 days due its inflexible nature. The body often cannot keep up with the fast pace of decreased red blood cells, causing the person to suffer anemia. Anemia can cause various organ damage over time, including to the brain, heart, spleen, lungs and kidneys, as well as to the skin and bones.

According to the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, most people with sickle cell disease are of African ancestry. About one in 13 African American babes is born with sickle cell trait and one in 365 black children is born with sickle cell disease.

RUNDOWN SHOWS:
1.
Sickle cell disease is a serious and lifelong health condition that predominantly affects people from African or Caribbean backgrounds. Symptoms include bouts of pain, strokes, organ failure, and complications that can result in reduced life expectancy. Some consider it a 'silent illness' as those who have the condition rarely speak about it or the pain that they live with.
We speak to 25 year-old Chris who lives with the disease and started his own initiative that aims to create conversation about the condition.
Produced by: Kesewaa Browne
Filmed and edited by: James Stewart
Animation: Gerard Groves
Commissioning Editor: Kimberley Rowell

#sicklecell #sickle #bbc

We are BBC Stories, a group of journalists making films, long and short, with the younger audience (18-24) in mind.
PCRI's Alex and Executive Director, Mark Scholz, MD, discuss common misconceptions in prostate cancer.

0:11 Does prostate cancer have symptoms? Prostate cancer does not have any symptoms until it has advanced to other parts of the body and developed tumors large enough to push against sensitive areas of the body. Monitoring for symptoms is not an effective way of detecting prostate cancer.

1:59 Is PSA testing necessary? The PSA test has several uses. It is used to screen men who have never been diagnosed, to monitor for a possible relapse in men who have already been treated, and to verify that a treatment was/is effective. It became controversial because of the overtreatment of indolent forms of prostate cancer, but the PSA test is still the best tool for early detection of prostate cancer and with expert advice one can avoid the risks of overtreatment.

3:56 At what age should one begin PSA testing? A man should educate himself on the PSA test and then begin testing in his 40s.

4:30 Do you need to have surgery first before having any other treatments? There was a time when that was a genuine concern, but with today's technology, radiation is more effective and less toxic than surgery. There are also other methods of ablating the gland for men with previous radiation (e.g. cryotherapy, HIFU).

Don’t know your prostate cancer stage? Take the quiz: Visit http://www.prostatecancerstaging.org
To learn more about prostate cancer visit http://www.pcri.org

To download the free Staging Guide visit http://www.pcri.org/prostate-cancer-s...

Who we are:

The Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to helping you research your treatment options.
New data suggests long COVID affects around 10% of 18-49 year olds who become unwell with COVID-19

The Health Secretary is urging the public - and especially young people - to follow the rules and protect themselves and others from COVID-19, as new data and a new film released today reveal the potentially devastating long-term impact of the virus.

The symptoms of ‘long COVID’ - including fatigue, protracted loss of taste or smell, respiratory and cardiovascular symptoms and mental health problems - are described in a new film being released today as part of the wider national Hands, Face, Space campaign. The film calls on the public to continue to wash their hands, cover their face and make space to control the spread of the virus.

The emotive film features the story of Jade, 32, who explains how her life has been affected - weeks and months after being diagnosed with COVID-19. “I wake up with a headache every single morning, I don’t feel like my brain is working the same way anymore. Day to day tasks at home are tough. It can wipe me out just doing basic things”

A new study today from King’s College London, using data from the COVID Symptom Study App and ZOE, shows one in 20 people with COVID-19 are likely to have symptoms for 8 weeks or more. The study suggests long COVID affects around 10% of 18-49 year olds who become unwell with COVID-19.

Public Health England have found that around 10% of COVID-19 cases who were not admitted to hospital have reported symptoms lasting more than four weeks and a number of hospitalised cases reported continuing symptoms for eight or more weeks after discharge.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: “I am acutely aware of the lasting and debilitating impact long COVID can have on people of all ages, irrespective of the seriousness of the initial symptoms. The findings from researchers at King's College London are stark and this should be a sharp reminder to the public – including to young people – that COVID-19 is indiscriminate and can have long-term and potentially devastating effects”

Dr Seun Bakare, Northwest Urgent Care GP, said: “Most people recover from COVID 19 without needing specialist treatment and for the majority symptoms will clear just after 14 days. However, for some the symptoms continue for weeks and months, if people are suffering with breathlessness, muscular pain and fatigue then they must speak to their GP and get a diagnosis”
The Government is committed to supporting people suffering long-term symptoms of COVID-19. The NHS recently announced £10 million to run designated long COVID clinics in every area across England where specialists and GPs will all help assess, diagnose and treat thousands of people who have reported symptoms ranging from breathlessness, chronic fatigue, “brain fog” to anxiety and stress.

If you are suffering from any long-term symptoms or health problems after recovering from COVID-19, speak to your GP, call 111 or check the Your Covid Recovery website - an online COVID recovery resource for patients.

Health and Medical Research is the key to improving our medical and hospital treatment. My experience as a Public and Patient contributor over some years now has highlighted the gap for research into Black People's health. Sadly most researchers avoid including Black People because they do not have to and they cannot be bothered to translate their research to make it relevant or even reach out. Another sad thing I have found is that research is now becoming a platform for only those who can afford to contribute to research. Participants are not having their time and expenses paid and sadly doing research with the least amount of money and time is becoming something to be proud of. Nobody wants to recognise that by doing so the basic human right to relevant medical treatment is being denied to some people.
As a Public and Patient contributor, I am asking Dear Researcher can we please stop this inequality in research.

In Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings.

Beautifully written, original, and revealing, this brilliant book is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Wilkerson will be in conversation with Bryan Stevenson, the founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), a human rights organization in Montgomery, Alabama. He is also the author of the award winning book Just Mercy, which was recently adapted as a major motion picture.

Purchase Book Here: https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9780593230251

-----------------------------------------------------Be Sure To Click SUBSCRIBE---------------------------------------------------------------

Visit us online at: http://www.politics-prose.com/
Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/PoliticsProse
Follow us on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/politicsprose
Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/politicsandprose/

Founded by Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade in 1984, Politics and Prose Bookstore is Washington, D.C.'s premier independent bookstore and cultural hub, a gathering place for people interested in reading and discussing books.
