The history of race and Britain is a long, complicated and contentious one. In this episode of the Present History Podcast, we’re going to take a deep, but brief dive into this history and how it directly affects us today, taking a particular focus on the treatment of black people in this country.

In light of all that has happened recently in America, with the murder of George Floyd, and the overwhelming response to it, I know that I’ve found myself finding it very easy to talk about racism in America, the history of it, I can name the major figures, talk about the events, talk about MLK and Malcom X, the Civil Rights Act of 1968, and everything that happened with that. But I, personally, know that I have very little knowledge of the history of race, racism and race relations in Britain. So this whole episode has kind of come out of my own personal research, as I have tried to understand the history of this issue in our own country.

So let’s dive into a brief history of being Black & British.

* On October 30 2012 WHEAT MST in association with Akoben Awards organised 25 Years On..., a Harrow African/Black History event that explored how Black History Month (BHM) was introduced in Britain, and the work of Labour Party's Black Sections in getting the first 3 African British MPs selected and elected, in 1987 - Bernie Grant, Diane Abbott and Paul Boateng (Keith Vaz, was not the first Asian MP -- that honour goes to Liberal MPs Dyce Sombre in 1841 or Dadabhai Naoroji in 1895).

The panel consisted of Addai Sebo (via video, former London Strategic Policy Unit (LSPU)/Race Equality Policy Group (REPG) policy team leader), Ansel Wong (former head of LSPU's REPG), Marc Wadsworth (former Black Sections chair), Kwaku (event chair, co-ordinator of Akoben Awards and TAOBQ (The African Or Black Question)), and Dr Hailu Hagos (WHEAT MST executive director). This episode covers the reign of Æthelred the Unready and the many problems he faced, most notably the Vikings. The reign of Cnut and his many achievements and his legacy alongside those of his two sons, Harold and Harthacnut are also examined. This period is the last time that a Scandinavian would rule England but their legacy changed England forever.

James Campbell et al. - The Anglo-Saxons (1991) - You'll only have to see this book one more time in the recommendations. But seriously, it's unmatched as far as an overview of Anglo-Saxon England is concerned.

Timothy Bolton - Cnut the Great (2017) - A new work and a good one at that. It's very pro-Cnut and is about changing the modern-day opinion of him from that of a conquering Viking to a modernising statesmen. Very good, though.

Michael Wood - In Search of the Dark Ages (2005) - Originally published in 81 so beware of straight-up believing everything. He covers most major Anglo-Saxon kings including Æthelred the Unready. It's very accessible and the chapters on Offa and Eric Bloodaxe are definitely worth a read.

Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Toppling Tall Tales: How well is the British story told in its public spaces? Do the histories of people of colour feature or figure? How are their lives to be venerated?

Doughty Street Chambers is delighted to invite you to its Black History Month Webinar on the role of statues and commemorative icons in the forging of British history and national identity.

In the wake of the global circulation of the perversely iconic video recording of George Floyd’s death, and with the measured impact of the pandemic appearing to highlight stubborn social disadvantage in black and minority ethnic communities, statues of those associated with imperial era slavery and colonialism tumbled. From Bristol to Oxford to London to Belgium, and across the Atlantic in the US and Martinique, the sculpted images of the architects and beneficiaries of colonial expropriation fell, at least from grace. In the UK, great men of history, Colston and Rhodes, were brought low by British people of all ethnicities; Britons who believed these figures to be symbols of antipathy to fellow black and brown citizens.

But where does this leave us now? What is the proper subject of the public memorial? How is a contested history to be fairly represented? To whom and for whom must our icons speak? Whose symbols are worthy of preservation?

This is the second in the series of Doughty Street’s BlackLivesMatter events, organised to mark the significance of this year, this moment and this movement in anti-racist thought and action. Our first event, held on 29 July 2020, focussed on smart and effective grassroots organising at local and national levels to provide the impetus for transformative change and celebrated the work of trailblazers in the campaign for racial equality.

This October the spotlight is on iconography and monuments in the public sphere and in the public consciousness. We will explore the ways in which history is written, and identity imagined, through public memorials and works of art.

The panel will be chaired by Doughty Street’s Ulele Burnham and will feature Ebenezer Azamati, student of International Relations at the University of Oxford, the award-winning artist Hew Locke, critical legal scholar Dr. Sarah Keenan, historian Dr. Melanie Newton, and Caroline Addy, Barrister, Common Councilman of the City of London Corporation, co-Chair of the Corporations Tackling Racism task force.

We will also be joined by David Lammy MP, Shadow Minister for Justice (and an associate member of Doughty Street Chambers). David started his working life at the bar, and later established himself as a politician in no small part because of his visibility as a black MP who was unstinting in his support for racial justice. His solidarity with the central aims of the #BlackLivesMatter movement is clear in everything he does and says.

Plenty is happening in Black British History- according to the Mail on Sunday, the OCR GCSE course ‘Migration To Britain c. 1000 to c. 2010’ which we heralded at WHBBH3 has been condemned as ‘pro-immigration propaganda’. The #RhodesMustFall campaign in Oxford is provoking widespread debate about Britain’s colonial legacy, as well as the significance of our public monuments; and a new BBC Two History series ‘A Black History of Britain’, presented by David Olusoga, is planning to erect over twenty specially designed ‘BBC Black History plaques’ to record and celebrate people and events that are pivotal to this history.

Following the success of our previous events in London and Liverpool, we would like to invite you to the fourth of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies’ Black British History Workshops at Watershed, (1 Canon’s Road, Harbourside, Bristol BS1 5TX) on Thursday 7th April 2016. The Bristol workshop will be co-sponsored by the University of the West of England (UWE) and the Institute of Commonwealth Studies.

The aim of the series is to foster a creative dialogue between researchers, educationalists (mainstream and supplementary), artists and writers, archivists and curators, and policy makers. It seeks to identify and promote innovative new research into the history of people of African origin or descent in the UK, and facilitate discussion of the latest developments in the dissemination of Black British history in a wide variety of settings including the media, the classroom and lecture hall, and museums and galleries, thus providing an opportunity to share good practice.

In collaboration with the University of the West of England and the Institute of Commonwealth Studies.

Stella Dadzie and Sofia Akel discuss the importance of reclaiming and recording Black women’s narratives; placing their experiences centre-stage, not just socially but also historically. Black women have been long relegated to the margins of history. Decolonizing that history means unearthing many, many untold narratives.

Stella Dadzie has been at the forefront of that work for many years. She is a founder member of OWAAD (Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent), a national umbrella group that emerged in the late 1970s as part of the British Civil Rights movement, and was recently described as one of the “grandmothers” of Black Feminism in the UK. Her career as a teacher, writer, artist and education activist spans over 40 years. Verso are proud to publish her work, including The Heart of the Race: Black Women’s Lives in Britain (co-authored with Beverley Bryan and Suzanne Scafe), and A Kick in the Belly: Women, Slavery and Resistance (forthcoming later this year).

As part of Black History Month the University of Wolverhampton is pleased to present a talk with Machel St Patrick Hewitt co-founder of the Caribbean Cricket Podcast. Introduction by Will Cooling, Head of Equality and Diversity at the University of Wolverhampton.

In the 1980s the West Indies dominated international cricket like few teams had done beforehand. Today West Indians are similarly dominate in T20 leagues across the world, and their team will seek to retain the World T2O World Cup they won in 2016.

In this talk Machel St Patrick Hewitt will look at what today's West Indian Cricket Culture means to him and other British people of Caribbean heritage. Machel is the co-founder of the Caribbean Cricket Podcast, a fan-led podcast that seeks to address the lack of international coverage of West Indian cricket, educating people across the world about what is happening both on and off the cricket field. His work has also appeared in Wisden, The Cricketer Magazine, and The Metro.
