The Home Office/Government has paid out £4m during 2014-2015, and approximately £4m - £5m in each preceding 3 years according to Freedom of Information requested by Victoria Derbyshire Programme.

The Home Office settled out of court the sum of £25k payable to a victim who was wrongfully detained and threatened with deportation, because immigration claimed he posed a serious and current threat, despite being placed on the National Referral Mechanism register as being a genuine victim of human trafficking.

The Home Office has been accused of covering up the plight of hundreds of modern slavery victims after it was forced to disclose data it previously claimed to have “no record” of. Figures obtained through a freedom of information (FoI) request revealed 507 people who had been enslaved or trafficked were detained under immigration powers in 2018, despite Home Office guidance that this group should not be placed in detention.

£80k was paid out to a Somali Asylum Seeker and £38k was paid out to a Palestinian female who was detained for a year, and pay outs for wrong detention is ongoing,
