Horrible Histories charts the contribution of Black people to British life throughout history. How did African soldiers come to be guarding Hadrian’s Wall? Why was a West African diver asked to help salvage Henry VIII's ship, the Mary Rose? And the actor Ira Aldridge tells us how he came to leave New York to find fame in 19th-century England.

This is part of the full episode 1 – BRITISH BLACK HISTORY SPECIAL (part animated) Duration 30 mins
The special focusses on the role that Black Britons have played throughout our history, right back to the Roman times, when the AurelianMoors were sent by the Emperor to guard Northern England from Barbarian invaders. We hear stories of the black Tudor diver hired by Henry VIII to retrieve treasure from the wrecks of his sunken battleships, and about Elizabeth 1’s grubby role in the origins of the slave trade. There are also sketches about the Sons of Africa, the amazing writers who campaigned alongside William Wilberforce, and famous Crimean war nurse Mary Seacole makes an appearance too.
